Nothing Gives Her Greater Pleasure Than Helping a Client Overcome Obstacles & Making His or Her Life Better. A conversation With Detroit Attorney, Judith Susskind

Attorney Susskind serves the law because she loves to help people who deserve justice and fighting for that justice brings tremendous satisfaction. Practicing medical malpractice law allows her to continue being a student and learning to perfect her craft.
Q: When did you know you would pursue a career as an Attorney?
JS: When I was a junior in college, at Michigan State University, I was told I needed to declare a major. I had a lot of different interests and was not sure what I really wanted to be “when I grew up.” One thing I did know, I wanted to keep going to school. I didn’t have enough science credits to go into medicine, so law school sounded good.
Q: Can you share with our audience, the types of law you specialize in?
JS: I specialize in medical malpractice cases. I represent the injured.
Q: What aspects of the daily job of being a lawyer interest you the most?
JS: I love pouring through the medical records and finding evidence for my case. I love finding the “smoking gun.” I love researching the medical literature and helping to put together a solid case for my deserving clients. The best part of my job, however, is successfully pursuing justice for my clients, and helping them to overcome their struggles.
Q: Why did you decide to attend law school?
JS: I love school.
Q: What types of cases do you handle?
JS: Medical Malpractice cases, almost exclusively.
Q: What is your approach or philosophy to winning or representing a case?
JS: Preparation. Preparation. Preparation.
Q: What advice would you give to young women who want to pursue a career as an Attorney?
JS: Do the hard work that allows you to be confident.
Q: Were there moments in your career that were pivotal to getting where you are today?
JS: Winning trials early in my career got me noticed.
Q: What are the best practices you have employed to build a successful career?
JS: I believe it is important to practice law with integrity and respect for this amazing and honorable profession. Being prepared helps.
Q: What's your advice for women in male-dominated fields?
JS: Do not have a chip on your shoulder. Do not focus on the fact that you are in a male-dominated field. Be prepared, and let your success speak.

Q: What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
JS: Trying cases soon after law school. I am now so grateful for the opportunity to do this. It has made me the lawyer I am today.
Q: Can you tell our audience one of your most memorable moments your career?
JS: Winning my first million dollar plus verdict, on a case that was given to me late in the game and was evaluated by a panel to be worth around $40,000.00. My senior partner did not want to try the case, so he gave it to me to try, probably expecting me to lose.
Q: What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace?
JS: Be prepared. Be prepared. Be prepared. Preparation breeds success. Success helps to build a wonderful reputation. There is no need to brag about your success. It will speak for you.
Q: Can you tell us how you manage your work life balance?
JS: I think it is very important to have fun and enjoy hobbies outside of work. I complete in ballroom dancing. I work out at a gym at least five days a week. I enjoy the outdoors. Health and sleep are very important as well. When you find time for fun, and when you enjoy life, and take care of yourself, I find that it helps you to maintain a healthy attitude and provides energy for all that you do.
